Deep Thoughts: TdF ’14 Stage 7

Pretty shallow thoughts on today’s tour- not too much to say!

  • Love how the peloton will reel the break in and let them dangle a minute out there for kilometers on end. So cruel!
  • Did anyone else notice the massive air horns for Peter Sagan when he was on the podium?? Someone in the audience blew their air horn non stop the whole time Peter was on the stage!
  • Speaking of Peter, why did he make that late attack, pulling Greg with him? Was he just trying his luck? Because I can’t think of another reason why you’d start so early. He seems to be lacking some tactical sense lately, but perhaps he’s just on a learning curve- winning is more than just sheer strength!
  • Another crash controversy: At first look, it seemed to me Talansky drifted left without looking and overcompensated when he saw Gerrans swinging into him. Coversations on Twitter raged as to whether Gerrans is at fault as well- did he cut over or did he hold his line? Most seem to be of the opinion that Gerrans cut over but Phinney and McEwen think otherwise! Talansky also thought Gerrans was in the wrong- Vaughters tweeted that Talansky wanted an apology from Gerrans. People on Twitter were saying from an overhead shot, Gerrans move didn’t seem so extreme, but I haven’t been able to find an overhead video of the crash. Your thoughts?
  • Tejay has crashed 5 times so far! Can’t believe he’s still in one piece.

Episode 76: OPQS Says “All Your Cobbles Belong to Me!”

Through impressive investigative journalism, Anna and Jeff reveal that the Inner Ring works for…. the NSA! That’s the only way to explain how awesome he is! And Anna reveals her not-so-secret crush on the Inner Ring. We also reveal how little we actual know about how cycling is set up right now by talking about the changes the UCI will be implementing to the teams and to the racing calendar.

Jeff loves Dwars Doors Vlaanderen, and we all love E3H and Gent Wevelgem.

Episode 59: Welcome to the SlackerCast!

Note: sorry for the bad sound quality- both of our mics weren’t set up right!

We prove ourselves to be the laziest podcast by talking about races we didn’t watch or follow.

We discuss how a 3 week stage race in the US is a looooong way off.

We wonder if we don’t get Bradly Wiggins because we’re not British.[VeloNation]

We compare Phil and Paul to math teachers who’ve been teaching for 40 years and can’t seem to find a new script.

We get excited about all the young riders having good runs in the US races, PLUS all the younger American riders going to bigger teams next year!

Anna comes up with a clever classification for the GTs: The Giro is sophisticated mother, the Tour is the overbearing father, and the Vuelta is the red-headed stepchild. Anna also confesses her shock that Nibali is actually a winning rider.

The pundits CONTINUE to put Basso as a Vuelta threat and we continue to be amazed by this.

Episode 58: The Doping is Back in Town

We’re back talking about all your favorite topics- doping, the UCI, Pat McQuaid!

First up, the Senate report.

We speculate on why O’Grady got so much grief for his ’98 positive over the others who were revealed as positive in the report. We discuss the other type of omerta that still exists in cycling – doping methods and networks.

Also, how and when do cycling fans move on? Who is at fault for all headlines that focus on doping – the journalists or the fans who click on the links?

Then, we talk about Pat McQuaid’s slow decent into crazy-town

And we demonstrate that we are bad at math.

We also talk a little bit about actual racing, when we talk about team transfers! Jeff rechristens it “Schleck Trek” and sings a little ditty.

Episode 54: The Tour is Coming!

We spend too much time talking about Jan Ullrich, Brad-we-refuse-to-call-him-Sir breaks up the the Tour?? and we compare Andy and Frank to Bert and Ernie (you can guess who’s who).

And the LE TOUR!

Episode 49: Pony Learns a New Trick!

Paris-Roubaix. The Queen of the Cobbles certainly delivered this year. Jeff has major hangups about RadioShack and wish they would just go away. Anna confesses she had NO idea what was actually happening during the race and we both love that Fabian is continuing to grow as a racer. Jeff also tries to convince Anna to name her cat Zdenek.

I know Strade Bianche happened AGES ago, but who doesn’t enjoy reliving a great race! We switch it up this week and talk about racing FIRST, because that’s what we like best. As a bonus, you get to hear Jeff’s sexy morning voice.

Episode 44: Omloop Review, Now Lance Free!

The whole gang comes together to talk about the first semi-Classic of the season, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Anna puts a moratorium on all topics related to Lance (but we make exceptions for Floyd). We discover that Jeff is the Fat Pat of Pelotonitis. And Kit the Dog makes a guest appearance.

New Kit! OPQS

Even though big man on campus Cav was joining their team, OPQS didn’t do much of an overhaul on their team kit.

2013 kit

2013 kit

Honestly, I like last year’s kit better. I’m not sure what they were trying to accomplish with that strange blue on the shoulders. It looks like a dot matrix pattern from the old printers. Or one of those 3D things that make a shape if you stare at them long enough. If they had consulted me (and why they didn’t, I have no idea), I would’ve made them put a dark blue on the shoulders and put the light blue on the sides.

2012 kit

2012 kit

I was pretty ambivalent about last year’s kit, but now that they’ve made it worse, I’m already nostalgic of the old days. *sigh (but I still hate the way the Quickstep logo looks like an afterthought)

Edit: One addition that is very cool is that they’ve put the Twitter of the rider on the side of the kit! I love this idea. OPQS has really embraced social media and this is just one more example!

Score: 4/10 because they ruined a perfectly good kit
