Episode 79: The Ardennes Classics are here!

We wonder if we accidentally got our time machine set to 2011, Anna mixes up her Brabanste Pijl and Amstel Gold- that’s what happens when you don’t actually watch Brabanste Pijl. Anna cuts Jeff by insinuating that he’s old and much more!

Episode 61: The Morality of Doping

Cookson is already making a good impression. Who knows what the future will bring, but for now, Cookson is doing okay by us. [Road.cc]

We take it as a good sign that Gilbert is willing to appeal to the UCI to lessen the racing load [CyclingNews]

Perhaps Twitter should take a step back and consider how their reactions against alleged doped riders might contribute to their mental breakdown before they go patting themselves on the back too hard over saving Santambrogio [Road.cc]

We round out the ‘cast with some cyclocross! We do a brief overview of the season so far.

  • Check out the #Svenness videos by @CXHairs for some cool looks into cyclocross tactics.
  • Calendar of UCI races, in US and overseas, here.

Episode 30: Talkin’ Shit

We give Skype high fives, we talk shit about things we don’t know anything about, and generally ramble on.

DOPING!

  • Vaughters supports Kimmage (link) and speculates that people aren’t speaking out because they’re afraid of the consequences.
  • Kimmage is energized by this support (give here!).
  • Jeff likes to pay his bills late. Or at least not early. Just like USADA (link). And honestly, why are we even talking about this stuff anyway, when we actually have no idea what is really going on??

WOMEN’S CYCLING!!

  • Stefan Wyman is using the power of social media to collect donations to support the women’s team he owns and manages. Donate here! Anna convinces Jeff that this is actually a good idea.

TRANSFERS!

  • Basso and Pozzato to BankBank?? (link)

RACING!

  • We talk about Bert winning Milano-Torino, Lombardia, and the newly revealed Giro route.

Episode 29: Grumpy Old Man

Jeff is back again this week, and Anna gets distracted by the color maroon, we discuss why Anna would make a terrible professional cyclist (besides the obvious), and she declares herself the Jan Ullrich of podcasting. Plus, Jeff casts the role of Hein Vebruggen in the upcoming cycling movie!

NEWS!

  • First, we discuss Cannondale taking over the lead sponsor title at Liquigas (articlearticle)
  • Pat McQuaid and the UCI does its best impression of a flip-flopping politician, and decides maybe truth and reconciliation isn’t such a good idea after all (article)
  • Hein Verbruggan does his best grumpy old/senile man, and gives a crazy-pants interview (article)
  • Verbruggan/McQuaid sue Kimmage (article)
  • Operacion Puerto trial begins (article)

TRANSFERS!

WORLDS!

  • We discuss what it means to wear the rainbow jersey, and this obsession cycling fans have with “respecting it.” Plus Nibali’s valiant attempt and Gilbert’s emphatic win.

Episode 24: Can we talk about racing, please?

NEWS!

  • Tyler Hamilton is writing an autobiography with Daniel Coyle. We approve. link
  • Gilbert is starting to sounds like a certain Spartacus… link
  • A sad, sad day for women’s cycling- AA Drink pulls sponsorship from it’s highly successful team link
    • Bridie O’Donnell has some harsh words about it all link
  • Vaughters actually has a lot more to say about his doping days link
  • Should there be a cyclist union? Honestly, at this point it seems like it would do more harm than good. link
  • A tiny update on Lance link
  • We talk about the updates to the silly season transfers
    • Six teams seem to be interested in Cav (link) and Wiggins understands why Cav would leave (link)
    • Fuglsang to Astana. Too many cooks at the kitchen there? link

RACING!!!!!

  • The Vuelta a Espana has started and Blazin’ Saddles has a good overview.
    • We are impressed and scared by the amount of climbing present.
    • It seems like a much better match between Contador and Froome than anything at the Tour.

Episode 15: We Read So You Don’t Have To

This week we talk about superteams, rumors, and about how Jeff can’t read.

Rumor Mill:

  • Will the Schlecks go back to Riis while Contador goes back to Bruyneel? Anna says unlikely. link

“Real” news:

  • Sorry Taylor- we pick Dave Z for the Olympics. link Also, Taylor, you were awesome during TourChats!
  • Is this current trend of airing dirty laundry in public a new thing, or has it been around for awhile? link BONUS: Jeff does a crazy pronunciation.
  • We wonder where the line is between hard man and stupid man (Theo Bos rode with a broken back link)

Racing!

  • Neither of us paid attention to Tour of Luxembourg. But Anna did notice that Jakob Fugulsang and his amazing dimples won. Also, we discuss Anna’s obsession with cycling.
  • Are we, as a cycling community, part of the problem when it comes to making the Tour the Holy Grail of cycling? Therefore, we’ve decided to ignore the Tour on this podcast (JUST KIDDING).
  • Dauphine: It’s half Dauphine and half Tour talk. Mostly we obsess about Andy and Wiggins. And we crack the case on why Wiggins couldn’t try the skinsuit for size.

Episode 13: Let’s Act Like Adults

This week I am joined by cycling historian Andy Homan. He’s the author of Life in the Slipstream: The Legend of Bobby Walthour  and he’s a great addition to my podcasting partner list as he compare Phil Liggett to Ron Burgundy. There was precious little news this week, but there was amazing racing to make up for it!

News!

  • Cancellara is back! Gilbert is back! The women of cycling fandom rejoice.

Racing!

  • Giro d’Italia: The racing has been amazing!! Lots of nail biting finishes… We are not impressed with the attitudes and passive aggressive behavior of the Shlecks or Bruyneel; are the Schlecks actually just spoiled brats? Andy wonders how you can base a team on just one region of a country- so we compare Rhode Island to the Basque Country. We wonder if Hesjedal can keep the jersey until the end. And I predict impressively wrong…
  • Cipollini! Stop picking on Cav! I also think Cav is giving up the Green jersey for the Giro jersey and the Olympics.
  • Tour of California: Of course we’re impressed by Sagan, the climbing, the close racing. We wonder who would win in a Sagan/Cav match up; Andy compares Phil Liggett to Ron Burgundy; and we discuss the winners and losers of the race.

Episode 10: The Russian Cycling Mafia

Well. In cycling, we can’t go too long without a doping positive to keep our cynical juices flowing, so this week Denis Galimzyanov filled that role for us. So of course we spend time talking about this subject. However, rest assured we cover other topics that are less depressing! Jeff Chandler (@c_fiddy) joins me again this week.

NEWS!

  • A positive tests leads to a suspicious confession. (CyclingNews article) We talk about the web of doping, why cyclists might start doping, and if doping cyclists get the support they need. (Listen for an embarrassing mispronunciation here)
  • Contador will return for the Eneco Tour, a race that has a special place in my heart. (CyclingNews article) We discover another man crush that Jeff has and we discuss my attraction to boys who are quiet off the bike but aggressive on the bike.

RACING!

  • Amstel Gold: Gasparatto showed he was using his head, Gilbert finally shows some life (and panache!), we discuss how Frank Schleck used to be fun to watch and how sad Andy is sometimes.
  • Fleche Wallonne: I think it could be anyone’s race, Jeff think Gilbert will finally take a win.
  • Giro del Trentino: Mainly I mispronounce this name to a very amusing end. And I also lament that Nibbles won’t be at the Giro.
