Episode 80: Panda Poop!

The dreaded “d” word (doping!) makes a comeback. We tackle the subject and come to NO conclusions, plus talk about Fleche Wallonne and LBL. Anna wants to hate Lance but is secretly (or not so secretly anymore!) fascinated by him. And we finally solve the mystery of Dan Martin’s LBL crash: panda poop.

Episode 66: Slow News Week

[note: sorry the audio is a mess. My computer wasn’t cooperating!]

We have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for news this week, but we’re not really complaining- it’s nice to have no scandals to talk about!

  • Tinkov buys Saxo Bank [CyclingNews]
  • Nibali says Froome was stronger when he was riding for Wiggins [Cycling Weekly]
  • Looks like Fuglsang will have to play second fiddle again next year [CyclingNews]
  • A victim of the buyers market – Baden Cooke [Velo Nation]
  • Bruyneel takes his toys and goes homes [VeloNation]
  • WADA adopts bans up to 4 years [road.cc]
  • Anna gives her thoughts on The Armstrong Lie

Episode 32: Reasoned Discussion

We tackle the tough topics so you don’t have to. The one topic that everyone is talking about, the one topic you’re all sick to death of- we dive in head first.

The Reasoned Decision!

All the affidavits are one the website with the Reasoned Decision, but the here are links to the ones we talked about:

A sampling of rider statements

A sampling of reactions and op-eds

And a blast from past, as Vaughters talks about what was happening, while not talking about what was happening…

Episode 20: Drama!

Another week of drama, intrigue and rants! We do our best to drive away all listeners in the first 5 minutes, Jeff feels the Lance drama would make for a good Grisham novel, reveals the secret to knowing when a team’s about to fold, sees Jens add to his Chuck Norris status, and accuses Bernard Hinault of poisoning riders.

SAGAS!

  • First up, the Lance saga! The plot thickens as a Livestrong lobbiest supposedly paid a visit to the chair of the Appropriations Committee to push for an investigation into USADA (article). Bruyneel opts for arbitration (article) and USAD isn’t intimidated by Lance and files a response to Lance’s injunction (article, PDF of USADA’s motion to dismiss, PDF of USADA’s exhibit 1, outlining all their arguments)
  • Next, the Leopard/Schleck saga: Fugulsang sues for his wages (article) and Frank and Cancellara admit they haven’t been paid (article). Of course the team denies financial trouble (article). Frank tests positive (article) and what that might mean for his and Andy’s future. Also, the Schlecks to ASTANA?? (article)

THE TOUR!

  • First we talk about how Twitter has gone off the chain. Then we tackle the nationalism issue.
  • Froome is a very loyal supporter, but admits he’s sacrificing, but we’re sure he’s waiting to be repaid in the coming years.
  • We dive into different interpretations of what happened on Stage 18 when Froome seemed to be dropping Wiggins and was “denied” a stage win.
  • We have a minor disagreement over what went down on Stage 14, when tacks were thrown, Tejay left Cadel without support, and Rolland left the peloton behind.
  • And we discuss my “breakdown” on Stage 17, with Nibali’s doomed attacks.

Episode 18: The One Where Jeff Lectures

Before we get started, we talk about why we skipped a week and why were not doing daily Tour podcasts (you can stop crying now). But then we plug some podcasts that are doing daily updates, namely ITV Cycling (with Ned Boulting and Matt Rendall of Real Peloton fame) and Velocast. Inner Ring offers some other options, as well.

NEWS!

  • Fuglsang might go back to SaxoBank (link) which leads Bruyneel to say fine, no more WorldTour races for you (link). We discuss why Bruyneel shouldn’t be seen as the bad guy, the UCI should.
  • Alex Rasmussen is given an 18 month ban by CAS for whereabouts violations (link) and we talk about why, as much as we hate it, it makes sense.
  • USADA officially charges Lance, others (link) and witnesses are supposedly leaked (link)
RACING!
  • After I complain about how boring this first week has been, Jeff lectures on me why that isn’t a bad thing and tells me to get over myself. Inner Ring seems to agree with him. We talk about Sagan and his salutes, how Cav beat Griepel and doesn’t seem to have any lead out, and how Lotto might be the new HTC train.

Episode 16: Where We Talk About the Things You’re Sick Of

Despite there being nothing of note that came out in the cycling world this past week, we found something to talk about. KIDDING. We actually spent the whole hour and a half talking about the topics you’re sick to death of- Lance and the Schlecks. Okay, maybe not the whole time. Also, I profess guilt at not including women in the podcast- I hate the thought of them being reduced to a side note in the men’s podcast. However, a new podcast devoted solely to women’s racing has just been launched by @_Pigeons_ and @entendered. So head over to their blog and check out women’s cycling!

News!

  • We spend a lot of time talking about and dissecting the Lance accusations that just came out. Jeff calls Horner a strange man.
  • We’re happy Bert signed with Saxo Bank for 3 1/2 years article
  • Liquigas is caught between a rock and hard place when it comes to putting Nibali in races, what with his announcement that he will be leaving
  • Hincapie will be retiring. It doesn’t mean much to me, but it might mean something to others. And Jeff thought Hincapie was a jerk. article
  • The US Olympic selection was announced and Jeff’s string of bad predictions continues. And I talk about how guilty I feel that we don’t cover women’s cycling in our show. So check out @_Pigeons_ and @entendered’s new women’s cycling podcast and make me feel better.

Racing!

  • Tour de Suisse: Sagan has no fear while he’s kicking ass and it’s like he takes a dragster to a Formula 1 race.
  • Ster ZLM Toer: I don’t t even know what country this race is in, but all I know is that Cav lost twice.
  • Tour de France: We feel bad for Andy and RadioShack and wonder at the irony that he’ll now be riding the Veulta with Contador. We felt sorry for Chris for a couple of minutes.

Episode 13: Let’s Act Like Adults

This week I am joined by cycling historian Andy Homan. He’s the author of Life in the Slipstream: The Legend of Bobby Walthour  and he’s a great addition to my podcasting partner list as he compare Phil Liggett to Ron Burgundy. There was precious little news this week, but there was amazing racing to make up for it!

News!

  • Cancellara is back! Gilbert is back! The women of cycling fandom rejoice.

Racing!

  • Giro d’Italia: The racing has been amazing!! Lots of nail biting finishes… We are not impressed with the attitudes and passive aggressive behavior of the Shlecks or Bruyneel; are the Schlecks actually just spoiled brats? Andy wonders how you can base a team on just one region of a country- so we compare Rhode Island to the Basque Country. We wonder if Hesjedal can keep the jersey until the end. And I predict impressively wrong…
  • Cipollini! Stop picking on Cav! I also think Cav is giving up the Green jersey for the Giro jersey and the Olympics.
  • Tour of California: Of course we’re impressed by Sagan, the climbing, the close racing. We wonder who would win in a Sagan/Cav match up; Andy compares Phil Liggett to Ron Burgundy; and we discuss the winners and losers of the race.
